Backup The Cloud

Hopefully you’ve read my article about backing up your workstation to the cloud and using a secondary backup to something like a USB drive, but what about backing up the cloud?  One of the benefits of using cloud computing is that you don’t have to backup, nor do you need purchase and maintain the software, and other components needed to backup.  If you are a little bit scared of say, having a client or co-worker nuke a document in Google Docs, Spanning Backup may be your solution.  It’s a cloud backup service (think of it as insurance) that backs up your cloud documents.  Crazy, I know, but if it’s something you worry about, there’s a cloud solution.

  1. HI Chris-

Thanks for bringing this important subject to light. While many people believe that just because their data is in the cloud nothing bad can happen to it, that's simply not the case. When Google gets the order to delete your data, they comply with that order (not to mention privacy laws) and delete it--for good.

Our customers want protection from accidental or malicious data loss or corruption, and that's what we provide. Spanning Backup continually backs up Google Apps data including docs, calendars, contacts, and soon, email, so they never have to worry about losing anything.

The cloud is the future, but it's not a panacea, and IT admins understand that even though they no longer have to worry about failing hard drive, they're still responsible for the data under their control.

I'd be happy to answer any questions in email (charlie.wood@spanning.com), on Twitter (@spanningbackup), or, here. :-)

    Cheers,
    Charlie
